Driving actionable intelligence and outcomes for Healthcare

Leveraging AI (for attempting) to deliver analytics or insights efficiently is not new – in-fact, there have been several attempts with ambitious products and erstwhile sophisticated, although disjointed AI solutions. The adoption of these solutions remained low, especially for Healthcare organizations due to a few key reasons : (a) inability to generate business insights at or near real-time due to AI and Data platforms being separate, (b) critical Healthcare insights locked in unstructured content typically not part of the data platform (c) ecosystem for integration of readily available insights with business applications and workflows (d) lack of integrated business semantics.

To put things in perspective, a typical Healthcare organization has more than twice as many data sources and applications and approximately a third of additional data access and compliance control points, as compared to a typical Retail organization. Bringing all the data and relevant semantics in one place and creating an ecosystem of generating comprehensive insights has been a lot more challenging in practice – even more that it appears on paper.

Modern data platforms, like Databricks, has been a leader in bringing a paradigm shift when it comes to bringing Data and AI capabilities on a common platform. This has further been boosted by recent innovation that leverages foundational LLM models and transforms generation of Business insights.

Databricks Genie brings a comprehensive set of capabilities to discover, build and deliver transformational insights via a governed, conversational and agent led approach.

There are several capabilities that Databricks solution stack enables for healthcare organizations to get the most value out of the complex and voluminous data:

  • Lakehouse Intelligence – Centralized platform for bringing ALL data together – including unstructured, streaming data. Provides a common platform for full spectrum of data and AI solutions.
  • Unity Catalog – enables a centralized governance for data, metrics, access controls and semantic definitions around KPIs, Metrics and business glossary.
  • AI/BI Genie space translates business questions into optimized SQL / semantic queries using semantics in Unity Catalog and executes to generate results sets.
  • Agent Bricks – create specialized agents that apply business context and transform quantitative data into business insights. Further extend the capability by integrating with other Agentic workflows that require insights to make decisions.
  • Genie Code – enables automation and radical efficiency to extend productionize agents; validation & tuning of the agents; SME supported refinement while staying within the guardrails of governance.
  • Metric Views – Define governed, reusable business metrics and KPIs as semantic views over Lakehouse data, enabling consistent, performant, and business-friendly consumption across Genie, dashboards, and AI agents.

    • Comprehensive insights from both structured (i.e. clinical data, scripts and lab orders) and unstructured data (e.g. patient charts or outpatient summary) available to a business user within their operations app help accurately and rapidly determine prior-authorization eligibility; this in-turn could mean a patient getting the much needed care in a timely manner and avoiding member frustration at best and an avoidable complication or severe adverse event at worst. These integrated insights can increase efficiency and effectiveness of the clinical staff leading to vastly improved member satisfaction and retention.
  • Fraud Waste and Abuse management
    • Payers are undertaking journeys to adopt agentic AI for detection and prevention of FW&A for each claim being processed instead of a small sample % - which was the only possibility without AI. The ability for autonomous AI agents to interact and leverage insights underpins capability to execute the processes accurately and with appropriate context. Each prevented FW&A directly contributes to the bottom-line for the payer operations; additionally, the process insights can help drive conversations for addressing process gaps or undesirable provider behaviour.
