William Winkenwerder Jr., MD., served as Chief Executive Officer of Highmark Inc. till May 2014. Highmark is among the 10 largest US health insurers and is the third largest integrated financing and delivery system, with $17.5 billion in annual revenues. Based in Pittsburgh, Highmark operates Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans in three states and a $2.5 billion integrated hospital-physician network in western Pennsylvania.
From 2001 to 2007, William Winkenwerder Jr., MD., served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs handling 132,000 personnel, 9.2 million beneficiaries worldwide and an annual budget of $40 billion. Before that, he held senior leadership positions at Blue Cross of Massachusetts, Prudential Healthcare and Emory University. William Winkenwerder Jr., MD., is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a board-certified physician who has practiced primary care medicine.
William Winkenwerder Jr., MD., graduated from the Davidson College and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He received his Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
