Mr. Brad Wilson served as President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) for almost 8 years, capping a 22-year career with North Carolina’s largest health insurer. Under his leadership, BCBSNC grew to a $9 billion company serving over 3.8 million customers. His experience as CEO reflected his passion for healthcare, a deep commitment to community involvement and strong expertise in business and public policy at the state and national level.
Mr. Wilson joined BCBSNC in 1995 as General Counsel and held a variety of senior-level positions before being named CEO in 2010. During his tenure, BCBSNC successfully implemented the Affordable Care Act and remains the only health insurer in North Carolina providing ACA products in all 100 counties in the state. He has served as Director of the BCBS Association, AHIP and numerous other national and state healthcare organizations. He is also the past Chair of the UNC Board of Governors and has led several state commissions.
Prior to joining BCBSNC, Mr. Wilson practiced law in North Carolina. He also served as General Counsel to Governor James B. Hunt where he directed the governor’s legislative strategy, led the legal office and served as a cabinet secretary. He holds a BA degree from Appalachian State University, an MA degree from Duke University and a law degree from Wake Forest University. Currently, Mr. Wilson serves as Executive in Residence at Wake Forest University.
